TWO SHORT FILMS BY JOHN GUTMANN

Introduction by Mark Johnson

Journey to Kunming was shot in China in 1944, where Gutmann was stationed during the war. He edited the film in 1949, adding the voice-over in the hope of making it more educational and professional. He later regretted the voice-over, saying it detracted from the imagery.

Le Palais Idéal is a film by Karen Holmes. It was shot by Gutmann in Hauterives, France, in 1957, and edited, with additional photographs by Gutmann in 1981 by Karen Holmes at San Francisco State University. The film documents a naive postman who created a fabulous palace in the countryside outside of Lyon.
